He was "SCREAMING" (literally) at a Youth Minister at Celebration Church and has been banned from any church pagents because of his anger issues. Your article suggests that selecting our judges should be transparent. Well, I have traveled throughout the state talking about judicial accountability and most people are frustrated that they do not even know who the judges are. That is largely because the judicial branch controls the rules for judicial elections and one of their rules (Canon 5) largely kept the voters ignorant of their judges. That rule was finally struck down as UNCONSTITUTIONAL by the US Supreme Court in 2002, which is why voters are finally hearing something about judges. In response, some members of the judiciary and other politicians are trying to take away our right to vote on judges altogether. That is not what a democracy is supposed to be. The issue before us is who should be selecting our leaders in a democracy; the voters or one person? Currently there is a very organized effort to take away our right to vote on judges and give that power to just one person--the governor. Judges are public servants and in a democracy we are supposed to elect our public servants. We want to keep politics and special interest money out of judicial selection and giving the power to appoint all our judges to one partisan politician who accepts special interest money--the governor--is not going to do it. Our first Chief Justice of the MN Supreme Court said, “If the people are incapable of selecting their judges, then they are also incapable of selecting the man who is to appoint the judges.” Judges do not need to be independent from the people. They need to be independent from partisan politics and accountable to the people. The real alarming thing about the Quie commission’s proposal is how they plan to get rid of judges they do not like. They suggest the governor (a partisan politician) appoint a committee that will decide who is a good judge and who is not and then put the “bad” judge up for a “retention” vote. The hapless judge will be on the ballot with the word “unsuitable” by his/her name. NOTE: We the people do not get to vote FOR anyone. We can only vote AGAINST a judge this committee considers unsuitable, which would create an open seat for the same governor to choose the replacement judge. Please consider this article from the StarTribune announcing our governor’s appointment of his campaign attorney on the issue of merit selection: Ventura was Minnesota’s only recent governor not to appoint close associates to the state judiciary. Arne Carlson gave judgeships to his CHIEF OF STAFF, a CAMPAIGN ATTORNEY, his SISTER-IN-LAW and HIS ATTORNEY IN THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE. Rudy Perpich, Carlson predecessor, named one of his former commissioners to the Supreme Court and his CAMPAIGN MANAGER to the district bench. Is this a good idea? This is not what Abraham Lincoln meant when he spoke the words, “. . .that government of the people, for the people, and by the people, should not perish from the earth.” Join me at www.griffithforjudge.com to save our right to vote.

For all the people who complain about the word "elderly" being in a blotter. Please know that is language the different police departments use not that of the Newsleaders office. There is no need to chastise the police departments for whatever vocabulary they use in describing different blotter events. I know that they personally stress about what to say, what not to say, how to say anything about each particular incident because there is no way to please everybody. It's been my opinion that no matter how much any of us stresses about anything you will always have bpeople who will complain and not have any suggestions on how to change it. I believe people just like to hear themselves whine instead of trying to be positive people and positive members of society.

Anyone in this great country can become wealthy if he/she works hard enough for it! As for the people who are being forclosed on thier homes, I'd be willing to bet they signed onto thier mortgages at a time when they could not actually afford it. Thats not anyones fault but thier own. The government is helping lenders so that people who would lose thier homes can work out a deal with the lenders to stay in thier homes, not bailing out irresponsible banks like you think. You should try running a business some time if you really want something to complain about. Try paying the taxes that we have to pay to recieve scorn by the likes of you.

Re: National Apostrophe-- Day I applaud someone defending the National language. It's not enough that vocabulary erodes at a blinding pace, but even punctuation is becoming a lost art. I did notice a couple of things you might brush up. First, stop confusing misspelling with "typos." As a newspaperman, you should know that "typos" originated, and died, when newspapers were set in cold type by linotype operators. Sometimes the type would break and occasionally the wrong letter would be sorted with the right ones causing a word to be misspelled in the paper when everyone had done what they were supposed to. In short, a typographical error is a mechanical error not a human error. Now that we all use computers, typos no longer exist, but mispellings persist and spell-check has caused them to proliferate. More misspellings get printed now because spell-check sees a correctly spelled word where we all know a different word should be (Talk about changing the meaning of a sentence!). Enough of that pet peeve. I also noticed you don't drive much or you would know that the dashes down the middle of the road are white to show you where the lane boundaries are. The long yellow lines are there sometimes, and sometimes not, depending on whether it's safe to pass. You have to see the dashed white line to know whether the yellow line is meant for you or the folks in the oncoming lane. So, in the end, the white dashes are vitally important to making the correct interpretation, a lot like punctuation.
