We can all practice at-home sustainability

The sustainability movement at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University, while working toward the goal of a “zero carbon footprint,” is challenging everyone, everywhere to set the same goal.

The following are suggestions from the committee that all people, everywhere, can adopt toward that goal:
• Turn computers, TVs and other appliances off when not in use.
• Walk, bike or skate instead of drive.
• Use fluorescent light bulbs instead of the energy-hogs, incandescent light bulbs.
• Carry drinking water in reusable containers.
• Turn the thermostat down a few degrees and wear a sweater or bundle up while watching TV or while sleeping.
• Get used to taking shorter showers.
• While brushing teeth, turn off the running faucet between rinses.
• Wash clothes in cold or warm (not hot) water, which saves a huge amount of energy.
• Share outdoor equipment, such as mowers, with neighbors.
• Set up a carpool system.
• Don’t buy things you do not need.
• Avoid products enshrined with too much plastic.
